Oceanic Survivor tells the story of the Giant Australian Cuttlefish. It’s ability to survive through both time as well as amid recent algal blooms and changing oceans that are heating up. Pared back to basics with a monochrome indigo colour palette, representing the bare creature with its dynamic shape and patterning taking centre stage.
Recently selected to be exhibited at the Reef Resilience exhibition, hosted by the Great Southern Reef Foundation, it proudly featured alongside other established and renowned ocean photographers and artists. It is inspired by my visits to Whyalla (South Australia) to witness an annual aggregation.
The Giant Australian Cuttlefish (Sepia apama) is a wonder of marine environments where it mesmerises with its ability to shape shift and change patterning and colouration. The large size of this artwork helps make it a commanding piece that draws us into a unique part of ocean life.

Surface patterns that replicate the subtle reflections of sun and water beam down the die of this stunning creature. An awesome apex predator and feared universally. There is actually still so much we don’t know about the tiger shark. I like to think this tigress is out making her own way in the world.
Using one colour only I’ve applied acrylic paint in a way that mostly resembles watercolour. I’ve moved the pigment around whilst wet to showcase the markings and subtle changes in tone that shape the shark. This requires a lot of concentration and tapping in to all the skills developed as an artist in a very short space of time. Once the paint is dry there is no moving it!
This artwork captures the silence, strength and beauty of this enormous marine mammal. It is perfectly poised and noble, allowing the large artwork to make a big statement on the wall.

Echoing the feeling that being underwater is as mind blowing as being in outer space. I have purposely taken a fantastical and almost surreal approach to this little painting. I wanted to capture a light hearted feeling where everything makes sense but where the scale and subject matter give you pause. Layers of rich blue alongside fish ‘floating’ contrast nicely with a metallic gold ‘halo’.
This small scale artwork is a partner to Ocean Universe where both pieces can fill up intimate corners of the home or office. It is framed in a deep edge frame that enables the artwork to standalone on a shelf or be hung on the wall from the wire hanger on the back.

I like to think of the Orca as the Queen of the oceans. Orca’s are intelligent and social beings, living together in their family pod in a complex society where the females are the top of their hierarchy. Because they hunt in packs they have been deemed killers, which unfortunately doesn’t celebrate their social and loyal behaviours.
Their striking colour makes them ideal for a monochrome painting like this and I have added the sunlight reflections of the waters ripples in part to help show the smoothness of the surface. My favourite ocean predator also happens to be an apex predator but really it is their intelligence and social loyalty that draws me to them.
This piece is a striking artwork that draws you to it on the wall. It is simple with a fine complexity much like the Orca itself.

This small scale piece is a surreal adventure into the ocean. When diving I can feel like I am in another universe. Everything around pops and takes your attention. It is at once sharp and detailed and floating and nebular. The contrast of detail in the fish against a space like backdrop makes this an interesting little piece that captures your attention. The ‘halo’ around the predominant fish is gold which adds another textural element that shines and glows in the right light.

Come with me on a journey into the deep blue. Where life is in abundance and diversity is all around you. Fish of all colours and shapes dart here and there moving to an invisible rhythm. The current guiding them in a coordinated dance above bright corals. Surrounded by deep vivid blue this is a world unlike any other. These are the waters of Indonesia, near Komodo Island.
I was so inspired by the memories I have taken home with me from diving these beautiful waters that I have created this series to capture the things I have seen.
Part of my Komodo series - Generally hidden in plain sight this Day Octopus made a rare appearance whilst I was diving the Indonesian waters. It was such a thrill to see this octopus change colour and shape in an effort to camouflage and hide away. Such a rare privilege to get moments like this with an octopus and hence the reason I named this piece ‘Exposed Octopus’. I’ve added a school of golden spadefish (batfish) in the background because I find them truly captivating and feel they have such a presence on an active reef. I wanted to capture all the life flittering around so I’ve also included moorish idols and golden damselfish.
As with all my pieces I take great care to represent the right species in the right place. I take my own photographs and study the fish and coral species to allow me to bring to life a true version of the underwater environment. It allows me to learn more about the places I love and helps me share the unique inhabitants that live there.

Part of my Komodo series - ‘Clownfish Revelry’ is a unique up close view of clownfish and the swaying anemone they reside in. I’ve paired this trio of clownfish up with a giant clam that are often seen in these waters. I can never resist swishing a hand over the top and seeing the clam’s gentle reaction. Their ability to read the slightest water movement is quite surprising. The diver in the background is surrounded by a school of red tooth triggerfish that school in absolute abundance in Asia’s waters. Scattered around the reef are Scissortail Sergeant’s and delightful little orange anthias that bring reefs to a spontaneous burst of life.

Masters of camouflage the wobbegong is also known as a carpet shark for their patterning across their bodies as well as their propensity for laying on the ocean floor. I wanted to capture this delicate pattern and highlight the striking semi symmetrical nature and draw the eye in closer to investigate. Using only a dark indigo blue allows the patterning to become the focus.
The patterning itself draws the viewer into this piece. It enables ocean lovers to look closely at this unique species and discover something new with every view.
