Iconic in Australia the Leafy Seadragon is as complex as it is uniquely delicate. Painting this sea creature in such a large format has enabled me to explore all the intricacies and bring all the details to life. Tiny fins on either side of the head are able to be replicated in fine detail and have helped me explore the character of this species. This leafy has been created to show each and every appendage as a Leafy would ideally have, as so often their limbs are damaged and broken due to their fragile nature. It’s a shape that can be viewed intimately and in depth.

As with all the paintings in the Oceanic series I have used only one colour that would best be described as a dark indigo blue. This monochromatic approach allows me to focus entirely on the unique shape of the marine species. I enjoy the technical challenge of painting this way as once the paint is applied it is very difficult to remove. It requires a skill and all absorbing concentration to keep the paint wet and moving in the desired way. It fills me with great pleasure to see the tones and layering bringing the shape to life.

This large artwork makes a big statement on the wall. It is a piece to be viewed over and over again as new details emerge.
